Review for the festival Baltica'03, Jelgava,
In Martin's day, November 10, in Jelgava Museum of History and Arts
passed review of ensembles from Zemgalia. The concert began by performance
of mummers - "Martin's children".
Though order of performing was determined by draw, hosts were outside of
a competition - Dimzēns acted the first: well sang, well played.
However, one song they have accompanied by 4 (!) psalteries, though in
folk tradition psaltery is considered as a solo instrument.
The second performed Dreņģeri from Bauska. Sang well, loudly, however,
the second voice sometimes sounded artificialy, resembled to choral.
Puduris from Dobele frequently sings on funeral, and, as this
program met to the subject of the festival - "earth, ground", they have
decided to show it on a stage too. It was not bad, but they had problems
to sing well some more complex melodies.
The participants of Svitene folklore ensemble have standed like to a battle:
in many lines, with intervals in half-meter. They have begun by military songs,
have finished by linen. Sounded well.
The performance of Vecsaule folklore ensemble was very heterogeneous -
there were some good singers and some who sang out of tune. The group
sang wedding songs from Vecsaule neighbourhood. At the end they showed
some dances too.
The sixth was folklore ensemble of Dobele Society of Invalids
Rota - with vigorous songs about beer. All would be good, but,
unfortunately, accordionist played very bad.
Trejupe too
sang songs about joint work and flax. They sang, played and danced well. Only
walking during one song was looked very artificialy.
The most farther group was
Kūrava from Kuldiga.
Though the costumes were diverse (they was from different centuries), the singing
sounded well. The soldier's songs were performed with a smack of mysticism, that
is typicaly for Kūrava. At the end one gay has shown a dance on crossed
sabres.
Last were Livberze Zemgaļi. The group had a band too - violin, zither
and accordion. With its accompaniment were performed all songs, even spiritual.
Some ensembles also set riddles during the performance, that pleasantly
freshed up the concert. Songs' recordings from this activity:
