Review for the festival Baltica'03, Kraslava and Dagda,
On Saturday, November 16, in Kraslava district there passed reviewes for the
festival Baltica.
The first review was carried out in Kraslava Culture house, and
6 groups particpated in it. Concert began and was finished by playing on
exotic instruments by Alexander Meier, and at the beginning the dance
group Jumis showed one dance.
The first group was folklore ensemble Rudzutaka from Udrishi parish.
It was pleasant to see in ensemble two men too, however, singing was though and
strong, but has not pleased: many songs had far-fetched, inappropriate to
folk traditions second voices and burdons, and some persons sang in a very
choral voice. Group sang about ground, grain, bread. Between songs they telled
folk songs - it is not fashionable.
Kraslava ensemble of Russian folk songs Ivushka has appeared a vocal,
not really a folklore ensemble. The singing was very good, and costumes -
beautiful. Group sang mostly about love.
In Kraslava lives a large Polish community, therefore in review participated
ensemble of Polish folk songs Strumen, which too (by the repertoir and
by the manner of singing too) has appeared as vocal, actually -
vocal-instrumental ensemble; band, by the words, was good: accordion,
contrabass and domra. Song about the far fatherland moved spectators to tears.
The performance of Skaista folklore ensemble Rauduveite was long,
but pleasant and many-sided. It began with songs about Mother of happiness,
sung by women. Then they switched on "grain" subjects. At the end children
have joined which have shown games and roundels. Between the songs the group
set riddles, told legends and stories from life.
The next was Shkeltova ensemble of Russian folk songs Zvonnitsa.
Staff - young women; repertoir - national. Sang well, but it, certainly,
was that kind of performance, which, though in the Soviet Union called
"folklore", is far from an ethnographic tradition.
The last was Izvalta folklore ensemble Izvoltīši. Songs basically
were about tillage and bread. Participants mostly was young children,
musical instruments - accordion and violin - was played by women.
Performance was not so convicing as performance of Rauduveite,
however, it was nice and pleasant.
At the evening took place the second review - in Dagda Culture house.
To Dagda have arrived 3 collectives.
The first acted Astashova folklore ensemble
Olūteni.
The performance was very impressionable: in first as uniform performance,
with interesting comments of the leader Inta Viļuma, in second - by good
vocal level, in third - with plain, but made with a taste costumes.
In Bukmuizha ethnographical ensemble
Akmineica
were people of different ages and sexes: men, women, boys and girls. The
performance was organized as theatrical action: between songs participants
talked, and the conversations' results was the following songs. The group
sang about joint work, about beer, chaffed in song (for unknown reason -
with cribs).
The third and the last was ethnographical ensemble
Aulejas sievas.
They sang spring songs from Auleja. Where was not characteristical for ethnographical
ensembles strong sounding. The second voice sounded awfully. Obviously,
because in 1996 the staff of ensemble was completely replaced by young
women, which do not know the singing tradition (it seems, the official version about
weariness of old women is unfounded; rather there were some intrigues).
Such pattern of change of generations actually destroys ethnograficility
of ensemble. Songs' recordings from this activity:
